Building a Resilient U.S. Consumer Technology Supply Chain: Costs, Constraints and the Path to Production

Published on October 2026

CTA’s newest research does a deep dive into complex tech supply chains, bringing new data to the topic of reshoring tech manufacturing. The report explores what it would cost manufacturers and consumers to produce 10 popular technology products in the United States, as well as what it would take in terms of capital expenditure, workforce and energy.

Not every reshoring path is equal. Full U.S. reshoring would produce major cost increases for the devices Americans consider most essential. Instead, the report suggests that an approach focused on domestic final assembly of select products – bolstered by lower tariffs on components and a ‘friendshoring’ approach to sourcing – is the most viable path to building out the U.S. manufacturing base.
