The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s vote to establish final rules for a cybersecurity labeling program for smart products at its meeting today:

“CTA applauds the FCC for advancing the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, which reflects many of CTA’s key recommendations aimed at making the program successful, protecting consumers and raising the bar on product security. Internet-enabled consumer products improve everyday life from video doorbells to smart washers and dryers, but there is also the risk of bad actors exploiting consumers’ connected devices. The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program will give consumers more information about the cybersecurity of the connected products they buy and ensure that those products meet certain standards.

Today’s announcement is a major accomplishment resulting from many years of work and close collaboration between the government, industry and other stakeholders. We are pleased to see a voluntary IoT cybersecurity labeling program based on the work of NIST that recognizes the need for international coordination and the importance of educating consumers about the label.

Many of our members have already expressed interest in voluntarily participating in the certification process, and we hope that the remaining program details can be finalized in time to see the cybersecurity label on consumer-connected devices at CES 2025!”
