The following statement is attributed to Michael Petricone, senior vice president of government and regulatory affairs, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, regarding tomorrow’s U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation hearing on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

“We appreciate the Senate Commerce Committee’s efforts to understand the importance of Section 230, the foundational law enabling the development of the internet, modern-day innovation and our nation’s global technology leadership. Section 230 has facilitated decades of American economic growth, innovation, freedom of expression and global tech leadership. The 26 words that comprise this law have made it easier for everyone's voices to be heard online, not just a select few.

“Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of our nation, it’s an embodiment of our free market approach to competition—we must preserve it. Consumers worldwide have expressed their support for this principle by embracing and enjoying American-based internet platforms—from Google to Facebook to Twitter to Amazon.

“We look forward to what should be a serious and thoughtful discussion on the merits of Section 230 as a foundation for American innovation, not an exercise of political theater.”
