NEXTGEN TV Transition Should be Voluntary, CTA CEO Says

October 28, 2025

  • Laura Ambrosio, CTA Manager, Policy Communications

The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, CEO and Vice Chair, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, which represents over 1200 technology companies, regarding the Federal Communications Commission's support of the nation’s ongoing voluntary, market-based over-the-air broadcast television transition to NEXTGEN TV.

“Thank you to the FCC for taking another step toward a fully voluntary transition to NEXTGEN TV. Americans should be able to choose the features they want in their TVs. Innovation thrives when consumers - not the government - pick the technology that works best for them.

CTA helped build the NEXTGEN TV standard and branding. Now it’s time for broadcasters to do their part – not by pushing mandates, but by promoting and educating viewers about this new technology.”
