The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, regarding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA):

“Progress on USMCA — the new NAFTA — is critical to the U.S. economy, and we’re encouraged to see a deal between the White House and Congress moving toward a final congressional vote. At a time when the United States’ commitment to free trade is being questioned – and with few days left on this year’s legislative calendar – Congress should ratify this trade agreement by the end of the year.

“The uncertainty that builds each day the new NAFTA isn’t passed means our global competitors get stronger. And as American workers, businesses and our economy struggle under the weight of tariffs – as they have for over a year now – passage of new digital trade provisions will establish the certainty and structure they require for a much-needed boost.

“America is the birthplace of the internet economy, and Congress must act to ensure our online platforms remain the technology of choice around the world. In its protections on the internet and digital economy – such as forced data localization prohibitions, balanced copyright provisions and intermediary liability protections – the new NAFTA gives us a key opportunity to cement our nation’s leadership as the best place in the world to develop talent and build companies.”
