The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, regarding tomorrow’s House Judiciary Committee Hearing, “Reviving Competition Part 1: Proposals to Address Gatekeeper Power and Lower Barriers to Entry Online.”

“We welcome this first in a series of hearings on online competition and look forward to thoughtful, fact-based discussions that explore how to preserve America’s global technology leadership and vibrant startup ecosystem. The world has changed profoundly in the last year, and consumers have benefited from America’s world-leading innovation as never before. Digital platforms empower Americans to stay productive at work, educate our children, connect with loved ones, access medical care and stock our kitchens—all without leaving our homes and exposing ourselves to COVID-19. Our society would not thrive as it has without these technologies.

“The U.S. economy is strong because we are home to large and small companies that have vastly improved the lives of millions, while creating jobs and providing economic opportunities. Our crown-jewel tech companies are the envy of other nations.  And these companies are regularly ranked by consumers as America’s most admired businesses. â€¯

“As these hearings advance, we urge Congress to continue to prioritize consumer welfare and ensure clear rules that support entrepreneurship and competition. Congress must continue to protect our country’s fair, free and vibrant markets, which enable American innovators to create a better future.”
