New CTA Industry Standard Sets Guidelines for Integrated CGMs used in Wellness Applications

Today, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® is publishing CTA-2124, a new industry standard establishing guidelines and design factors for data from Integrated Continuous Glucose Monitoring (iCGM) devices used in wellness applications. CTA members including digital health leaders Abbott and Dexcom drove a collaborative effort to develop the new standard.

“iCGM data for wellness give people the insights they need to better manage their own health, and can support early detection of potential health issues,” said Kinsey Fabrizio, President, CTA. “In addition to the transformative benefits for consumers, the standard also sets clear guidelines for industry across the globe, providing clear and distinct design guidance. We are proud to convene an industry-led effort that improves lives.”

The standard outlines the current landscape for iCGMs and provides a series of use cases for iCGM data, including wellness and athletic performance. It also highlights the benefits of broader access to iCGMs, offering patients access to their health metrics and enhanced user experience by automating data and information sharing. The standard identifies best practices in design for user interfaces, transparency, and interoperability, supporting broader adoption of this technology.

“iCGM data are a new avenue to turn data insights into actionable healthcare interventions, linking wearables with electronic health records and other digital tools to drive timely patient care,” said Kerri Haresign, Senior Director of Technology and Standards, CTA. “This standard will support better data sharing and streamline treatment for patients and their health care providers.”

With over 1100 participants, CTA’s standards program creates voluntary standards driven by industry experts to improve consumer experience across technology sectors. This standard joins the portfolio of over 35 digital health related standards covering everything from sleep monitoring, to physical activity, to artificial intelligence.

"Digital health solutions that integrate iCGM data can empower diverse groups to make informed lifestyle choices -- from people with prediabetes or at risk of developing diabetes, to people interested in improving their overall health," said Don Abbey, EVP Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, and Medical Affairs, Dexcom. "For developers, this standard provides key definitions, guidelines, and considerations for design and development. For consumers, this standard outlines reasonable expectations for the user experience, including in-app education, insights, and notifications. We're proud to have worked closely with the CTA to lead this initiative to inform the general public and industry leaders about iCGM integration for health and wellness."
