CTA CEO: Bright Future for ENERGY STAR Program as it Moves to DOE

March 5, 2026

The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, Executive Chair and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®:

“As American households face rising energy costs, Americans want to know the efficiency of the technology that powers their daily lives. For more than 30 years, American consumers and businesses who want to save energy and money have looked for the ENERGY STAR label as a trusted, government-backed indicator of that efficiency. After discussions last year around privatizing or ceasing the program, the Trump Administration’s decision to continue the ENERGY STAR program under the leadership of the Department of Energy (DOE) is a win for American consumers and the technology industry.

CTA has long supported and advocated for ENERGY STAR, a public-private partnership that has driven real energy efficiency gains for consumers. Since its inception, ENERGY STAR has helped consumers and purchasers avoid more than $500 billion in energy costs and save 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity. In that same timeframe, more than 7 billion ENERGY STAR certified products have been sold – and according to the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, more than 90% of Americans recognize the mark. As a voluntary, government-backed program, ENERGY STAR is a perfect example of how thoughtful, industry-led guidelines support consumers, innovation, and competition – without imposing regulations.

We look forward to continued partnership with Energy Secretary Wright and the team at DOE as they assume responsibility for ENERGY STAR, continue this robust, popular program, and strengthen American global technology leadership.”
