CTA CEO: American Innovation Needs Trade Certainty
February 11, 2026
ARLINGTON, VA – February 11, 2026 – The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, Executive Chair and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®:
"American innovation thrives when businesses have the certainty they need to invest and grow. Today’s bipartisan vote to deny “economic emergency” tariffs on Canada under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) is a welcome step toward restoring Congress’s rightful authority over tariffs. It also recognizes the value of U.S.-Canada trade ties for people on both sides of the border.
Congratulations to the Congressional leaders who voted on behalf of American businesses and American consumers. They know we need trade policies that grow jobs, strengthen relationships with like-minded partners and allies, and keep the U.S. competitive."

International trade is vital to the consumer technology sector. Global supply chains are intricate and often take decades to develop. Unfair trade practices should be addressed at the World Trade Organization and with our global allies. Opening global markets, not closing them, spurs economic competitiveness.
