Article Summary
Statement from Doug Johnson, vice president, technology policy, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, regarding the White House’s announcement of first-ever guidance on regulatory and non-regulatory policy approaches to artificial intelligence applications in the private sector, which follow the principles laid out by U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios earlier this year.
The following statement is attributed to Doug Johnson, vice president, technology policy, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, regarding the White House’s announcement of first-ever guidance on regulatory and non-regulatory policy approaches to artificial intelligence applications in the private sector, which follow the principles laid out by U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios earlier this year.

“Artificial intelligence is a key ingredient technology for innovations that can improve and sometimes even save our lives—from self-driving vehicles to digital health applications.  We were pleased to have provided input into the White House’s private-sector-driven AI approach, including welcoming Michael Kratsios and Deputy U.S. Chief Technology Officer Lynne Parker – architects of President Trump’s American Artificial Intelligence Initiative – to CES® 2020, where they laid out their plans for this guidance memorandum.

“The memo’s conclusion that, ‘Federal agencies must avoid regulatory or non-regulatory actions that needlessly hamper AI innovation and growth,’ is spot on. A smart, flexible, risk-based approach to AI policy is the right one for American consumers and businesses.

“CTA is committed to ensuring American consumers benefit from AI-powered products through federal policy that promotes our country’s continued leadership in this field.  We look forward to our continued work with the federal government in implementing smart policies, whether regulatory or non-regulatory, around AI technology.”
