The following statement is attributed to Walter Alcorn, vice president, environmental affairs and industry sustainability, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), regarding the Accurate Labels Act (S. 3019/H.R. 6022) introduced in the Senate and House yesterday requiring all federal, state and local labeling laws adhere to consistent, science-based standards to ensure clear and accurate information:

"CTA thanks Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR) for their work introducing legislation requiring product labels across the U.S be accurate and based on credible science. Too often, consumers get conflicting or unclear messages that harm well-intentioned efforts to inform the public. Instead, we must ensure only relevant and up-to-date information is shared - possible through innovations such as smartphone-enabled 'smart labels' - to effectively protect consumers.

"The importance of communicating the risks and relevant information of any purchased good can't be overstated. But current state and sometimes local government approaches to labeling mandates confuse consumers at best - and strip their faith in the credibility of our institutions at worst. We ask members of the House and Senate to quickly pass this legislation to ensure consumers have access to product information that's accurate and credible - needed now more than ever - throughout the United States."
