Article Summary

“President Trump wisely decided against imposing more tariffs on China, but we still need a trade deal that removes all tariffs – which are simply taxes paid by U.S. consumers and businesses. Tariffs on Chinese imports already cost the American tech sector an additional $1 billion per month, and new tariffs would crush many small businesses and startups," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA.

The following is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), regarding President Trump’s decision to postpone new tariffs on Chinese products:

“President Trump wisely decided against imposing more tariffs on China, but we still need a trade deal that removes all tariffs – which are simply taxes paid by U.S. consumers and businesses. Tariffs on Chinese imports already cost the American tech sector an additional $1 billion per month, and new tariffs would crush many small businesses and startups.

“Over 300 companies and business associations came to Washington over the past few days to plead with the administration to stop tariffs. And more than 600 businesses of all sizes across the country sent a letter to President Trump opposing tariffs. The president should stop ignoring America’s job creators and workers and remove tariffs that are hurting American families and businesses.

“We need an enforceable trade deal with China – but imposing taxes on Americans in the form of tariffs is a bad strategy. We strongly urge the Trump administration not to impose any new tariffs as it continues to work toward an enforceable agreement that eliminates existing tariffs and protects U.S. leadership and innovation.”
