Today, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) released its newest white paper, What is Artificial Intelligence?, a practical guide to understanding the meaning and importance of cognitive technologies and their adoption across industry. CTA’s Technology Council – a leadership caucus for CTO-level executives from CTA member companies – led the white paper project, which explores components of artificial intelligence (AI) such as deep learning, natural language processing and explainable AI.

“AI is one of the key ‘ingredient technologies’ over the next decade – it’s already delivering benefits today and will transform nearly every sector of our economy,” said Brian Markwalter, senior vice president, research and standards, CTA. “Our industry needs to maximize the opportunities AI offers, overcome the challenges it presents and enable the innovations that will make our lives healthier, safer and more efficient. This white paper offers a high-level discussion of the technology itself and lays out some of the issues society will need to address as AI becomes a bigger part of our lives.”

CTA released the white paper at its Technology & Standards Fall Forum in Hollywood, CA. The five-day event – which brings together engineers, C-suite executives and representatives from technology alliances – features sessions on AI including:
  • The AI Landscape: From Silicon Valley to Capitol Hill – an overview of CTA’s new white paper including the trends, terminology and next steps for the technology industry;
  • AI and Content Creation – a look at the opportunities and challenges of using AI to create, edit and conduct quality assurance on content; and
  • How AI is (already) Disrupting AR/VR Technologies – a discussion of the impact that AI is having on AR/VR today, tomorrow and in years to come.
The new white paper follows the March release of CTA’s research on Current and Future Prospects of Artificial Intelligence, a holistic view of AI that pairs evidence with deep insight from subject-matter experts and key stakeholders.

AI will again be a dominant theme at CES® 2019, with companies across all industries unveiling AI solutions in a variety of markets such as digital health, smart cities, sports tech and vehicle tech. Additionally, CES will feature a dedicated AI & Robotics Marketplace, featuring the latest developments in AI and the next generation of intelligent, autonomous machines.
