Reshoring the U.S. Consumer Technology Industry: Costs, Constraints and the Realistic Path
Reshoring is a central priority in U.S. trade and manufacturing policy, but the conversation has largely focused on the desired outcome rather than what reaching it would require.
A new CTA study with Kearney models what it would cost to make 10 of the most widely-owned consumer technology products in the U.S. — smartphones, laptops, televisions, monitors, headphones, earbuds, smart speakers, smartwatches, robotic vacuums and video game consoles — measured against what it costs to source those products today. It also quantifies the constraints: infrastructure and energy; facilities and capital expenditure; workforce; critical minerals and inputs; and tooling.
CTA and Kearney will present the findings, followed by a moderated discussion with member company executives connecting the research to real sourcing, manufacturing and investment decisions. A networking reception follows. The full report and executive summary will be available at the event.
