Five Companies Celebrating LGBTQ Pride

June 21, 2019

  • Author: Jeanne Abella

June is Pride Month – a time to celebrate and advocate for the LGBTQ community and honor the Stonewall uprising of 1969.

Today, one of the most prominent LGBTQ-related bills facing the debate is the Equality Act, which if passed would provide protection for LGBTQ people from discrimination in employment, education and housing. Although the U.S. House of Representatives already passed the bill, it still faces an uphill battle in the U.S. Senate.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, in 2019 more than 200 major brands and businesses have placed their support behind the Equality Act. Through financial assistance and awareness campaigns, these brands have played a pivotal role in elevating Pride to its wide-reaching visibility today.

Here’s how five CTA member companies are celebrating 50 years of Pride:

Microsoft was the first Fortune 500 company to provide same-sex domestic partnership benefits in 1993 and one of the first companies to include sexual orientation in its non-discrimination policy. To celebrate 50 years of Pride, they are continuing donations to nonprofit organizations and increasing visibility for LGBTQ artists by releasing limited-edition products designed by members of the community.

Lyft not only has added gender-neutral pronouns to its ride-sharing app, but is organizing inclusion trainings, which will require drivers to call passengers by their preferred pronouns. The company’s partnership with the National Center for Transgender Equality also will provide transgender drivers with financial resources to change their given names.

Verizon partners once more with PFLAG – an organization uniting disowned LGBTQ youth with caring parents, families and allies. Verizon also is releasing a video called “Love Calls Back” to raise awareness for PFLAG’s services.

In addition to donating funds to the Human Rights Campaign, Postmates is partnering with Sweetfin Poke to promote a special rainbow poke dish, of which 25% of the proceeds will benefit the L.A. LGBT Center.

T-Mobile, in collaboration with Ariana Grande, commissioned a “Pride Walk” art installation outside Ariana’s shows at Brooklyn Barclays Center. For every picture or video participants posted of the installation using the hashtag #ArianaWithUs, T-Mobile sent a donation to the Human Rights Campaign. The company also is partnering with PopSocket to promote the Pride Poptivism PopGrip. A portion of the profits will go to GLSEN, a national education organization focused on ensuring safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students. .

As the LGBTQ community grows, major policy and cultural shifts are still in progress. With significant public platforms, brands can inspire impactful change by ensuring audiences listen to the voices of the community.
