Changing the Game: How Tech Keeps Video Gamers Connected and Competitive

Video games are becoming an integral part of our culture. Just like technology transformed the music industry at home, on the go and at concert venues, rapid innovations in tech are creating brand new experiences for gamers – from augmented reality (AR) mobile apps to cloud-based game streaming and competitive gaming opportunities like esports. Two studies released by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® examine these key trends in the gaming category and highlight the growth in the esports ecosystem.

Level 1: Technology Bringing Games and Connections Everywhere

According to the CTA study, 2019 Future of Gaming, 70% of those ages 13 to 64 in the U.S. are gamers, which represents nearly 200 million consumers.

One of the key factors leading to an increase in the number of gamers is that consumers are no longer just playing games solo in the comfort of their home. In fact, mobile devices have the highest usage overall at 65%. Tech manufacturers such as ASUS have released smartphones with screen, battery and audio tech specifications that offer an enhanced gaming experience. To address increasing consumer demand for on-the-go gaming, Nintendo also released a mobile specific Switch ‘Lite’ to accompany its flagship Switch home/portable console.

In terms of future game-related technology purchases, the CTA study notes within the next 12 months consumers will purchase rechargeable batteries (42%), additional controllers (38%), headsets with microphones (32%), large hard drive storage devices (30%) and big screen TVs (30%).

The emergence of live game streaming services is revolutionizing gaming into a connected and social experience. Cloud and subscription-based services, such as PlayStation Now and Google Stadia, are top of mind for gamers willing to give up their physical copies of games. As a result, 44% of gamers welcome a subscription game streaming service, and more than 50% welcome a remote cloud gaming service so they can play their console games while away from home. On these subscriptions, chat functions are also available to encourage socio-emotional and task-oriented chats.

Level 2: Technology as the Esports Industry’s Competitive Edge

Gamers no longer just play games. Live game streaming services, like Twitch and Mixer, and esports tournaments, like the Overwatch World Cup and Fortnite World Cup Finals, provide gamers with a variety of opportunities to engage with fellow players, streaming personalities and professional esports players. The CTA study Esports Landscape and Opportunities Report forecasts U.S. esports fans will grow to 27 million, and even more on a global scale.

Esports are built around games that have high skill caps. Fans who aspire to play like elite gamers are interested in the newest tech advancements to improve their play. Manufacturers like Razer have released products such as the Viper mouse designed for esports players but that all gamers can order. Team-related, comfy and ergonomic peripherals will help current and future gamers stay engaged with teams and play like a professional. In fact, one in five gamers plan on purchasing gaming furniture, such as ergonomic chairs or desks, within the next year.

For those viewing esports at an arena, tech-enabled esports infrastructure will continue to create and enhance a fan experience that is engaging, memorable and rewarding. For example, screen signage and streaming technology will help viewers in the arena and at home customize their own viewing experiences like watching their favorite players, specific match ups or the commentators. Moreover, for those viewing at home via live stream, services such as chatbot integration and payment processing will help esports teams and content distributors to offer ways to engage with other fans and teams.

Gamers enjoy playing and watching video games with others whether they are at home playing solo or in an esports arena with thousands of other people. Continued hardware, software and network advancements will keep gaming competitive, fun and engaging.
