In 2026, the Consumer Technology Association® (CTA), leading television manufacturers, operating system vendors, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) and Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) expanded the scope and membership of the voluntary agreement to improve the energy efficiency of TVs sold in the U.S. and Canada.

The expansion marks a significant achievement in measuring the on-mode efficiency of televisions. Parties to the agreement expect to save an estimated 2 TWh of additional energy in its first seven years, on top of the even larger projected savings – 10 TWh annually – from the program’s standby-mode power commitments that were adopted in 2023 and became effective in 2026.

The landmark agreement is based in part on a groundbreaking CTA method for measuring TV energy consumption developed with extensive input from energy advocates, regulators and TV manufacturers. This measurement procedure, ANSI/CTA-2037-D, was subsequently adopted by the U.S. Department of Energy as the official government procedure for measuring TV energy consumption. It was recently proposed for use in Canada as well.
