Labeling Policy
As products become more connected and data-driven, labeling must evolve beyond static, physical formats. Harmonized electronic labeling (e-labeling) supports efficient global markets and improves transparency, accessibility, and sustainability for consumers.
E-Labeling is the Future
E-labeling makes product labels dynamic, updatable, and interactive. It allows manufacturers to provide real-time compliance updates, improves accuracy and accessibility, and reflects how consumers already engage with product information in a digital world.
Countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe already permit e-labeling. Consumers in the U.S. are also prepared to access product information digitally. With 97% of U.S. households owning smartphones, the infrastructure for digital labeling is already in place.
CTA Calls for E-Labeling
The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® advocates for policies that support this transition, working with policymakers to modernize labeling requirements and promote harmonized global standards.
We support policies that:
Permit e-labeling as a primary method to communicate regulatory information
Promote harmonization across jurisdictions using existing standards and frameworks
Avoid fragmented or state-specific labeling requirements that increase complexity
Support innovation, global trade, and efficient product distribution
Ensure accessibility and inclusivity in labeling practices
CTA stands ready to work with policymakers to advance modern, flexible, and globally aligned labeling systems.
