Congress is Weakening America’s Cybersecurity; CTA Ad Calls for Stop to Anti-tech Bills

The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®: 

Today, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and its members launched a television advertisement in D.C. and several states calling for Congress to vote against competition bills, including the American Innovation and Choice Online Act (H.R. 3816 and S.2992), the Augmenting Compatibility and Competition by Enabling Service Switching Act (H.R. 3849), and Open App Markets Act (S.2710). The advertisement focuses on one of the dangers should these proposals become law – the negative cybersecurity implications to Americans, especially at a time when cyberattacks are on the rise.   

“We are facing a real and present threat to American consumers. These bills will enable foreign rivals and cyber-criminals to access U.S. consumer data. Congress’ push to weaken tech companies will undermine the online security of millions of Americans. Congress should oppose these bills as they prevent platforms from moderating foreign propaganda or protecting the security of consumer devices. Instead of attacking tech companies, policymakers should work with the tech industry on legislation to strengthen Americans’ privacy and online safety.”
