Consumer Perceptions of and Expectations for the Sharing Economy

For millions of people, the emergence of the sharing economy has provided consumers with a variety of options for accessing goods and services, especially in the realm of transportation and lodging.  But what are the general sentiments about these services among the everyday consumer where these services operate the most? How do their perceptions differ among users and non-users?  By focusing on the overall sentiment of consumers in the top 25 most populated U.S. cities, this research looks to address these questions as well as the following objectives:

  • Understand consumer awareness and attitudes towards sharing economy overall as well as specific services such as ridesharing and homesharing services.
  • Learn the triggers to use among current and potential users.
  • Gauge consumers’ sentiments towards regulation of sharing economy platforms.
