Encryption

Government mandates to weaken device security will open a pandora’s box, leading to unintended consequences and potentially exposing personal information to bad actors. While national security is a critical priority, citizens also need to trust their private data is legally protected. That trust enables innovation, economic growth and societal benefits. Tech companies have a duty to their customers to ensure their data is secure, and companies should be able to do so without fear of legal reprisal.

The government’s request in the Apple iPhone case sets a troubling precedent, and once we go down that path, we can never go back. Further, it would encourage other and potentially hostile regimes to do the same thing, weakening security across the globe.

Finally, we believe we need to have a national conversation about encryption. That discussion belongs in Congress, with participation from security experts, the technology industry, privacy groups and consumers.
