CTA Statement on USPTO Confirmation Hearing

Arlington, VA – November 29, 2017 –
The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), regarding the Senate Committee on the Judiciary hearing to consider Andrei Iancu's nomination to be Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent And Trademark Office (USPTO):

"We're glad the Senate is moving forward with the confirmation of Andrei Iancu as head of USPTO. As an experienced lawyer, patent professor and engineer, he has displayed the skills and qualifications necessary to be an effective leader for our nation's patent office. The consumer technology industry relies on a strong patent system to grow and create American jobs. CTA's member companies include many of the country's largest patent holders, as well as small startups that built their companies around a single patented invention. Unfortunately, these same companies are also the most common victims of extortionate lawsuits and threats by patent trolls. We look forward to working with the prospective next USPTO director to ensure that our patent system does the best job possible of fostering innovation and discouraging abuse."
