Consumers Optimistic About Overall Economy in January, Says Consumer Technology Association

Arlington, VA – January 26, 2016 –

Consumer confidence toward the overall economy increased in January, while sentiment toward tech spending decreased slightly this month, according to the latest data released today by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™, formerly the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®.
Overall Economy
The CTA Index of Consumer Expectations (ICE), which measures consumer sentiment about the U.S. economy as a whole, increased 6.5 points in January to reach 175.2.
“Despite a slowdown in momentum at the close of 2015, consumer confidence toward the overall economy jumped in January,” said Shawn DuBravac, Ph.D., chief economist, Consumer Technology Association. “Lower gasoline prices and greater confidence in employement are likely the cause of the rebound from December.”
Technology Spending
The CTA Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE), which measures consumer expectations about technology spending, decreased 0.3 points to 87.9 in January.
“Consistent with what we have seen before in the month of January coming off the holiday season, consumer sentiment toward tech spending is down very slightly,” said DuBravac.
The CTA Indexes are updated on a monthly basis through consumer surveys. New data is released on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Find current and past indexes, charts, methodology and future release dates, on the CTA Indexes page.
