CEA Commends House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee for Addressing the Power and Potential of the Sharing Economy

Arlington, VA – September 29, 2015 –
The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding today's House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade hearing entitled, "The Disrupter Series: How the Sharing Economy Creates Jobs, Benefits Consumers, and Raises Policy Questions:"

"As Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) said, 'The sharing economy is an example of American innovation at its finest,' and we couldn't agree more. We thank Chairman Burgess and his subcommittee for recognizing the immense value of the sharing economy and its impact on economic growth, job creation, competition and consumer choice. By leveraging the power of anytime/anywhere connectivity, the sharing economy is more efficiently allowing consumers – including the more than 80 million Americans benefiting from this robust marketplace – to exchange goods, services and ideas more freely than ever. And the results are undeniable: enhanced consumer choice, lower barriers to entrepreneurship and stronger job creation. We look forward to continuing our work with the subcommittee to better understand the tremendous impact of the sharing economy and what policymakers can do to preserve this spirit of innovation to the benefit of all Americans."
