CEA Approves New Home Automation Specifications at Technology & Standards Forum

Arlington,  – March 27, 2015 –
Today, participants in the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® Technology & Standards Forum approved two new specifications for home automation control networking.
ANSI/CEA-709.5, Control Networking Protocol Specification: Part 5: Implementation – Application-Layer Guidelines, facilitates the exchange of data and control information in building automation, home automation and control, and in building management systems. ANSI/CEA-709.6, Control Networking Protocol Specification: Part 6: Application Elements, aims to insure interoperability between various control networking protocol implementations in building automation, home automation and control, and in building management systems.
CEA’s recent study Adoption and Usage of Home Automation Technologies shows a majority (61 percent) of online households expect to purchase energy-efficiency home automation technology at some point in the future, followed by security technology (51 percent) and entertainment technology (40 percent).
“These new specifications recognize the exponential adoption and benefits of connected living, and will help solidify the foundation for the Internet of Things penetration rate in homes and offices,” said Brian Markwalter, senior vice president, research & standards, CEA. “By improving the synergies of the latest connected technology, we’re helping to fulfill a market opportunity for manufacturers and consumers alike – providing better, more efficient interoperability among our in-home smart devices.”
Other highlights from the forum include:
  • The first meeting of CEA’s new Health and Fitness Technology Subcommittee;
  • Publication of a technical report on audio loudness titled, Study of Audio Loudness Range for Consumers in Various Listening Modes and Ambient Noise Levels;
  • Reports from CEA Market Research on the market for high-resolution audio, and the Wi-Fi Alliance on the latest Wi-Fi developments;
  • And a panel discussion on the impact of consumer trends and market developments on voluntary industry standards.
The next CEA Technology & Standards Forum will be held Sept. 15-17 in San Diego, Calif.
CEA’s standards committees produce standards, guidelines and technical reports that help grow the consumer technology industry. All are welcome and encouraged to join any of CEA’s technology activities. For further information please visit or contact
