On Tuesday, January 8, CTA’s President and CEO Gary Shapiro took the CES stage with Executive Vice Present of CES Karen Chupka to present a State of the Industry Address.

Shapiro announced the release of CTA’s newest book, Ninja Future: Secrets to Success in the New World of Innovation, which explores the accelerating pace of innovation with a 360-degree view of the latest tech trends. Also released at CES 2019 was the 2019 International Innovation Scorecard. This edition expanded in breadth and depth, with a total of 61 counties and the European Union evaluated across 28 indicators to determine who is fueling the fires of innovation. Shapiro announced the 16 countries who earned our highest honor of 2019 Innovation Champions.

To top off the excitement, Shapiro announced that CTA will be investing $10 million in venture firms and funds focused on women, people of color and other underrepresented startups and entrepreneurs. According to data collected by Pitchbook, all-women teams received just $1.9 billion of the $85 billion total invested by venture capitalists last year in the U.S. That’s only 2.2 percent of the total. It’s critical that we don't miss out on the innovation from the next unicorn startup simply because they lacked investment.

“To continue to evolve and grow, the tech industry needs more equal access to venture funding,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA. “Various research reports indicate diverse teams make better decisions and achieve greater profits. At CTA, this is one more tool we are deploying to help promote diversity in the technology industry.”
