How 3D Printing Technology Could Provide Housing

Sara Rice, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)

A tech startup has come up with an innovative solution to help the 1.2 billion people in the world who live without adequate housing. Low-cost 3D printing technology could provide affordable and stable shelter in countries around the world.

ICON, a construction technology startup, recently showed off a model home 3D-printed with cement that only cost $10,000 to build. The 650-square-foot house took less than 24 hours to complete and using cement instead of printing in plastic provides a much more permanent and sturdy structure. There is less waste and lower labor costs involved compared to traditional construction. The startup has partnered with a non-profit and plans to build a community of 3D-printed homes in El Salvador.
