WeChat Plans to Put Augmented Reality in the Hands of Millions

Sara Rice, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)

WeChat, the popular messaging app in China, continues to add features in hopes of becoming the app for everything. Now WeChat is developing an augmented reality (AR) platform for the app.

The AR platform is made with smartphones in mind and will be an open platform that third-party developers can use. WeChat is looking to make detailed objects look as realistic as possible with 3D rendering. They’re also developing their own technology that will be able to calculate the position of virtual objects relative to their environment.

With more than 963 million active users, WeChat has the potential to bring AR to the masses.
