MLB is Hoping for a Home Run with Augmented Reality

Sara Rice, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)

The regular baseball season may have just ended, but there’s already something to look forward to about the 2018 season. MLB is planning to add augmented reality (AR) features to its popular At Bat app. The app is one of the most popular sports app and could provide baseball fans with more insight to the game.

Through Apple’s ARKit, users of At Bat will be able to see different statistics and data combined with the action happening in real time. For example, a user could point their device at the field when a player makes a hit and the screen would show the ball’s trajectory, velocity and distance. MLB hopes that incorporating this new technology will help bring this data to life and engage more fans in the stands.
