How Street Signs Could “Talk” to Self-Driving Cars

Sara Rice, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)

Self-driving cars are closer to becoming a part of our daily lives than ever. But before we enter a world of fully autonomous vehicles at every intersection, cities and towns will need to update roads and highways in order to adapt.

In-vehicle GPS and sensors are used to help self-driving cars navigate roads. 3M is working on creating smart and connected roads that would be able to communicate with self-driving cars. Our roads of the future could have pavement marking paints that are embedded with information that will help guide self-driving vehicles. Road signs could be equipped with information about upcoming turns in the road. This kind of technology would be used along with the sensors and GPS that tell self-driving cars where to go and would serve as an added safety measure.
