A Future Free of Boarding Passes, Thanks to Biometric Tech

Sara Rice, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)

Flying just got a little less stressful thanks to Delta. Eligible passengers at Reagan Washington National Airport can now use their fingerprints to board any Delta flight. The biometrics program allows passengers to forgo a paper or mobile boarding pass and instead use their fingerprint as proof of identity. The next phase of the program includes allowing passengers to use their fingerprints to check a bag.

The airline has partnered with CLEAR to provide the technology. The two will work together to deliver a more convenient customer experience, and feedback from customers and employees has already been encouraging. The system is more accurate than paper boarding passes, and it allows employees to spend their time assisting customers instead of scanning individual passes. Delta will use the results from this test to figure out the next steps for implementation.
