Cortana and Alexa Will Now Talk to Each Other

Sara Rice, Social Media Intern, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)

Many of the major tech companies have developed voice-controlled digital assistants and smart speakers. These devices are powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and have helped people stay more connected and interact with devices and online services seamlessly. Voice recognition tech is one of the defining technology trends of 2017. According to research done by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), projections for 2017 unit sales for voice-controlled digital assistant devices are projected to reach 11 million units (a 53 percent increase from 2016) and generate $1.3 billion in revenue (a 22 percent increase from 2016).

Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana are just some of the popular digital assistants that consumers have adopted in recent years. (Amazon and Microsoft are CTA members).

A partnership has been created between two of the big players in the digital assistant market. Amazon and Microsoft have been working together to make Alexa and Cortana communicate with each other. Leaders from both companies believe that working together will help further the technology and ultimately bring benefits to consumers.

There are strengths that Alexa and Cortana have that could benefit the other. Cortana is integrated with Microsoft’s Outlook application and is mostly used on PCs. Alexa is used through Echo speakers that people keep in their homes. An integration between the two could, for example, make it easier for users of Alexa to access their Outlook emails.

Amazon and Microsoft hope that in the future, one digital assistant will be able to direct the user to whichever assistant has the best information. Ultimately, they believe this partnership will provide consumers with more choice when it comes to AI.
