How Sony Gives Back to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Many companies have taken their success and used it as a way to give back to communities and organizations that help build up the leaders of tomorrow.

The tech industry is one of the most innovative, exciting and successful industries in the world. Many companies have taken that success and used it as a way to give back to communities and organizations that help build up the leaders of tomorrow. Sony, a Consumer Technology Association (CTA) member, is one of those companies.

We had a chance to speak with their team about their partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

How is Sony involved with serving the community?

Sony is committed to making a difference in the communities where our employees work and live. Our corporate giving strategy focuses on the areas of youth (K-12), community and the environment.

Our national philanthropic partner is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), where our CEO, Mike Fasulo, serves on the National Board of Trustees. Together, we’re working to bridge the gap in arts education. We are also proud to provide local support for other community partners including Jr. Achievement, I Love A Clean San Diego, Chelsea’s Light Foundation, Portraits of Love, Classroom of the Future Foundation and Meals-on-Wheels of Greater San Diego.

Tell us a little about Sony’s involvement with the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Throughout the K-12 environments, arts education, access to technology and exposure to high-tech careers that leverage creativity are important. Neal Manowitz, VP of DI, the Digital Imaging team, and Sony’s community relations team all lead these efforts in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of America.

On a national level, we support the BGCA’s Imagemakers National Photography Program and Contest and its extensive photography curriculum, which is now available to club kids throughout 4,000+ club locations, and have also donated photography equipment to more than 200 clubs throughout the U.S. Additionally, we’ve been able to leverage our Artisans of Imagery ( to meet with BGCA kids during key events like their Keystone Conference and the annual Imagemakers celebration event, where Sony recognizes the national teen winners of the Imagemakers National Photography Contest.

On a local level, we also work with clubs in the areas where we have satellite offices, creating photography immersion events that allow BGCA kids to expand their creativity while shooting with Sony cameras.  
 What is in the future for the partnership between Sony and BGCA?
Sony remains committed to supporting the BGCA and programs geared toward inspiring creativity through the use of technology. Since 2014, Sony has cosponsored the Military Youth of the Year, Pacific Region Celebration. This year’s event will be held on July 29 in San Diego, Calif.  The Youth of the Year program is focused on shaping tomorrow’s leaders by fostering character and leadership development, starting them on a path to a great future.

We look forward to continued support of BGCA’s efforts in cultivating confidence and cognitive development in our youth.
