These Entrepreneurs Created Motorized Luggage You Can Ride to Your Destination

Traveling is stressful, and getting through the airport with your luggage, family and friends can sometimes be a struggle. It was because of these hectic moments that entrepreneurs Kevin O’Donnell and Boyd Bruner launched the idea of Modobag — motorized luggage that you can ride.

 
 
We had a chance to speak to the Modobag team about their revolutionary product:

How did you first get the idea for Modobag? What problem were you trying to solve?
Modobag is the creation of Chicago entrepreneurs Kevin O’Donnell and Boyd Bruner, college buddies who studied Industrial Design at the University of Illinois.
 
O’Donnell got the idea while he was racing through an airport with a group of kids and a bunch of bags, when one of the kids jumped on his luggage and asked for a ride. A global traveler who has launched several companies and startups, O’Donnell had an A-HA moment - “Traveling would be so much easier and stress-free if we could motorize our luggage!” As soon as he reached his destination, O’Donnell called Bruner and the concept for Modobag was launched.
 
O’Donnell and Bruner spent the better part of two years developing a prototype, sourcing component parts, fine-tuning CAD blueprints and testing their design. They assembled a team of accomplished technologists, designers, marketers and road-tested travelers to help them bring Modobag to market.
 

How does Modobag work?
Modobag combines the functionality of regular luggage with the innovation of personal transportability to help travelers and their belongings get to their destination three times faster than walking.
 
Modobag is powered by one of the safest and most advanced carbon-free lithium battery systems in the world. We are among the first retail travel products in the world to use the latest nanocrystal technology, the same type of groundbreaking technology used in the Porsche Mission E. The batteries have super-fast charging capability of up to 80 percent charge in just 15 minutes. There are two speed settings - indoor speed at up to 5 mph and outdoor speed up to 8 mph.
 
What is the most rewarding part of creating a new product? The most challenging?
Each day our team rededicates itself to our mission of changing the way the world travels. We really are breaking new ground in so many areas — in the area of luggage design; in terms of personal mobility; and, most of all, in improving the overall travel experience of so many individuals. We have the potential to impact such a wide range of people. From savvy travelers, to individuals with neurologic or degenerative issues, to business people to college students to urban day trippers. They are all looking for a safe and efficient way to get from Point A to Point B, and Modobag gets them there.
 
The further we have gotten into this project, the more exciting it has become. Modobag has become one of the most innovative advancements to hit the travel industry since rolling suitcases were introduced in the 1970s. That’s pretty cool.

What is next for Modobag?
We are about to conclude a quick-hit crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo that has exceeded all of our expectations - and more. We reached our goal of $50,000 within the first 24-36 hours, raising more than $325,000 (and growing), a whopping 360+ percent past our goal. What’s even more important is the tremendous response we have received from consumers and potential partners who have given us valuable feedback for us to incorporate in our marketing strategy moving forward.
 
We will be delivering the first production run before the end of this year, and look to launch in the general consumer marketplace in the Q1 2017.
