Social Media Dominates as Most-Used Apps on Smartphones

Danielle Cassagnol, CEA

A majority of people in the United States now own a smartphone and tablet and the way we use those devices is evolving. Consumer Technology Association (CTA)TM research, Consumers Journey to Purchase: Wireless, found that social media dominates as the most-used type of app on both smartphones and tablets, influenced primarily by millennial users. Following social media on the list are weather, games and music. Photo/video apps rank fifth; again driven by millennials.

These consumer activities and behavior also support findings from CTA’s report The State of Play in the US Wireless Retail Market, prepared by Strategy Analytics last year. The study found 24 percent of wireless device users spend more than 10 minutes per session on social media. As the number of social media options increases, so does the amount of time we spend communicating in diverse ways.

The Consumers Journey to Purchase: Wireless report also looked into the growth of mobile video streaming, online consumer shopping habits and mobile gaming among people in the United States:

CTA’s Consumers Journey to Purchase: Wireless is the final report in a three-part study offering an extensive look at consumers' retail behavior and paths to purchase in certain consumer tech categories, including health and fitness devices and audio and wireless products.
