8.5 Billion Reasons CE Accessories are Looking Up

Chris Ely, Consumer Technology Association

With an expected $8.5 billion in projected wholesale revenue in 2014, consumer electronics (CE) accessories is a sizeable category for the industry. Recent Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) research on CE accessories at retail explores how and where consumers shop for accessories, what they want in their accessories and why they purchase CE accessories.

The study finds mass merchants or general electronics stores are the most popular physical retail outlets, whereas general electronics, specialty electronics and mass merchant sites are the most popular online channels. The study also finds most CE accessories are planned purchases, bought at the same time as their associated CE devices.

Key purchase drivers include replacing broken accessories, making CE devices easier to use, and enhancing the device’s performance and protection. In addition, CEA finds approximately half of consumers prefer bundling options when purchasing CE accessories and express high interest in personalizing their CE accessories.
