Autonomous Driving: The Auto-Pilot of the Highway

Although we can’t hop in a DeLorean and go back in time like Marty McFly, who would want to go back when you can practically drive into the future nowadays? With all the innovation surrounding the automotive industry, cars have certainly come a long way since the 1980’s gull-winged door classic. Going back in time doesn’t seem nearly as cool as getting in a car that drives and parks itself.

The autonomous car, also known as the driverless car, self-driving car or robot car, is taking the auto industry by storm with several companies planning on debuting autonomous cars in the foreseeable future.  Although as of 2013, fully autonomous cars are not yet available to the public, many models offer features with autonomous functions, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane assist
  • Blind-spot assist
  • Speed flow adjust
  • Parking assist
  • Accident avoidance
  • Driver fatigue detection
Several industry giants including GM, Ford, Audi, Nissan and Toyota, are currently testing driverless car systems and BMW plans on a 2014 U.S. debut of the first-ever, all-electric BMW i3. The i3 will feature ConnectedDrive - innovative mobility services like dynamic range map and the BMW i remote app.

While there are concerns about the ethics surrounding driverless cars, there is no denying that they will be a part of our daily commute, sooner rather than later.

As one of the top listed topics for inspiring innovations at the 2014 International CES, driverless car has been named a “game changing” technology. If you’re attending the show, be sure to visit these automotive areas:

  • Driverless Car Experience TechZone – located in the LVCC, Gold Plaza, will feature a variety of technologies that support the future of autonomous/automated driving
  • GoElectricDrive TechZone – located in the LVCC, North Hall, will feature a dynamic showcase of electric drive technologies, products and services.
  • The BMW i Experience – located in the LVCC, Silver Plaza will feature the first-ever, all-electric BMW i3
  • Check out this survey and see what people said they would do while in a driverless car. If you had an autonomous car, what would you do while it drove you around?
