CEA Partners with American National Standards Institute to Address National Priorities Through Standards
Arlington, VA – 12/13/2012 – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®
and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) partnered this week to host a workshop at CEA’s headquarters in Arlington, Va., addressing national priorities through standards. The workshop was part of the ongoing exploration of the government’s participation in standards development and explored the use of private-sector standards by government agencies.
“The U.S. has a competitive advantage in standards-setting, which is magnified by effective government support and participation in the process,” said Brian Markwalter, senior vice president of research and standards at CEA. “We hope for further improvements in the collaboration between industry and government agencies to ensure an environment that both encourages innovation and keeps the U.S. at the forefront of technical standards development. Efforts such as this workshop make strides toward a stronger alliance between agencies and the private sector’s standards writing community.”
Under the leadership of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the federal government established an interagency group in 2010 to encourage federal agencies to strategically focus and actively engage on critical standards-related issues. Millions of products and services rely on industry standards, including standards related to public policy goals such as energy efficiency, accessibility, homeland security, health care and product safety. For decades, the private sector has committed funding and hours of their experts’ time to develop the evolving network of standards in use today.
This week’s workshop brought together industry and government leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with identifying – and referencing – private-sector standards in federal regulations. The workshop is part of the continuing study of the government’s participation in standards development, including whether and how the Office of Management and Budget should consider supplementing agency guidance contained in OMB Circular A-119.
